about

Poetree

I stare at your eyes and I see nothing
I tread on your toes and they crack and crumble
I beat at your body and it sounds hollow
If I cut you, do you not bleed?
Consume me, feed from me

Muffle my words
Drag me inside
Coat me in oak and make me your child

I flick at your arms and they bend and buckle
I pluck at your hairs and they carpet the earth
I stroke your skin and it's hard as armour
If I light a match do you not burn?
Consume me, feed from me

Muffle my words
Drag me inside
Coat me in oak and make me your child

I breathe in your scent and it overcomes me
I taste your sweat and it's bitter and dark
I dig at your roots and they go on forever
If I soak you , do you not rot?

Muffle my words
Drag me inside
Coat me in oak and make me your bride

'Poetree' was inspired by and written in Keldy Forest, North Yorkshire where Juice once spent a couple of days on a self-imposed writing retreat. During this period of isolation I have walked every day in the local woodland and and trees have been a great solace to me. In this song the writer, wracked with guilt for having written their own words for years on paper, offers themself up as a sacrifice to the tree. The tree obliges and swallows them whole.
